Body Butters, Oils and Exfoliation in Warren

Facial skin care gets the attention and the body gets an afterthought, which shows by February. Our Warren store on Van Dyke in the Majestic Plaza stocks body butters, oils, soaps, scrubs and lotions, open until 9 PM Monday through Saturday.

Butters, lotions and oils

Lotions are the lightest, absorb fastest and suit normal skin and warm weather. Creams are thicker and hold moisture longer. Body butters are heaviest, with shea and cocoa butter bases, and are what genuinely dry skin needs. Oils seal rather than hydrate, so they work best applied over damp skin or over a lotion, not on their own onto dry skin.

Timing beats product

Applying moisturizer within a few minutes of getting out of the shower, while skin is still damp, traps that water in. The same product applied to bone-dry skin an hour later does considerably less. This one habit does more for dry skin through a Michigan winter than upgrading to a more expensive butter.

Exfoliation, in moderation

Physical scrubs and chemical exfoliants both remove dead surface skin, which helps with rough patches, keratosis on the arms, and ingrown hairs. Once or twice a week is plenty; daily scrubbing irritates skin and makes it drier. Be gentler on the chest and neck, where skin is thinner. Never exfoliate skin that's already broken or irritated.

Winter specifics

Hot showers feel good and strip oils, so warm and shorter is kinder. Harsh soaps do the same, and a cream-based body wash or a moisturizing bar is gentler. Hands and lips take the worst of the cold, so a hand cream and a balm are worth keeping in a coat pocket rather than in a bathroom cabinet.

Our Warren store is at 27750 Van Dyke Ave in the Majestic Plaza shopping center, between 11 Mile and 12 Mile. It's open until 9 PM Monday through Saturday and 6:30 PM on Sunday, which makes it the usual evening stop for Warren, Center Line, Sterling Heights and the Oakland County suburbs off I-696. Van Dyke gets you there from the south, and the I-696 Van Dyke exit from the east or west.
