Choosing a Cleanser and Moisturizer for Your Skin

Working out your skin type

Wash with a gentle cleanser, apply nothing, and wait an hour. Skin that feels tight and looks flaky is dry. Skin that's shiny across the face is oily. Shiny on the forehead, nose and chin but comfortable elsewhere is combination, which is the most common. Skin that stings or reddens easily is sensitive, and that can overlay any of the others.

Cleansers

Foaming and gel cleansers suit oily and combination skin, removing oil effectively. Cream and milk cleansers suit dry and sensitive skin, cleaning without stripping. Oil cleansers and balms remove makeup and sunscreen well and are often used as a first step before a second cleanser. If skin feels tight and squeaky after washing, the cleanser is too harsh regardless of type.

Moisturizers

Gel and lotion textures are light and suit oily skin. Creams are richer and suit dry skin. Ointments and balms are heaviest and are for very dry skin or specific patches. Look for humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid to draw in water, and occlusives to hold it there. Oily skin still needs moisturizer; it just needs a lighter one.

Sensitive skin

Fewer ingredients, no added fragrance, and one change at a time. Fragrance is the most common cause of reactions in otherwise well-formulated products. Introduce anything new on a small patch along the jaw for a few days before putting it on the whole face.
