What to Buy for Each Protective Style

Box braids or knotless braids

Braiding hair in your color, with a couple of spare packs. Braiding gel and edge control. Mousse for the finish. A rat-tail comb, sectioning clips and small rubber bands. Hot water and a towel, or a lighter alternative, for sealing ends. A satin scarf for the first nights while the tension settles.

Crochet

Pre-looped crochet hair in the style you want, a latch hook, and hair or thread for the cornrow base. Rat-tail comb and clips for the base. Mousse or setting lotion if the style is curly, or rods if it finishes in a set curl. A light scalp oil with a nozzle applicator for the parts.

A sew-in

Bundles, plus a closure or frontal in matching texture and color, bought together. A wig cap or weaving net for the base. Weaving thread and a curved needle. Adhesive and remover if you're gluing lace. A sulfate-free shampoo, a leave-in and a light oil for aftercare, plus an applicator bottle for washing the scalp.

A wig install

The unit, a wig cap, and then either adhesive with its matching remover or the combs and bands a glueless cap relies on. Laying gel or spray if there is lace at the front. A shampoo and conditioner formulated for the fiber, since your own products are wrong for both synthetic and human hair units.
