Pantyhose, Tights and Socks in Metro Detroit

Hosiery is one of those things nobody plans a trip for and everybody needs at short notice. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry pantyhose, tights and socks in the clothing section, which makes it a useful add to a trip you were making anyway.

Denier, and what it means

Denier describes the thickness of the yarn. Low numbers, roughly 10 to 20, are sheer and summery. Middle numbers, around 40 to 60, are semi-opaque and the most versatile. Higher numbers, 80 and above, are opaque tights that work as a layer in cold weather. Higher denier is also more durable, which matters if snags are your usual complaint.

Getting the size right

Hosiery sizing goes by height and weight together rather than dress size, and getting it wrong is why a pair rolls down or gives out at the toe. Check the chart on the packet rather than assuming. If you're between sizes, the larger one lasts longer, since stretched-to-the-limit hosiery ladders sooner.

Making a pair last

Take rings off before putting them on, and gather the leg up rather than pulling from the waistband. Keep a clear nail polish or a dab of hairspray for stopping a run from spreading. Hand wash or use a mesh bag, and never put them in a hot dryer, which destroys the elastic.

Socks

Everyday socks, ankle socks and thicker winter pairs sit in the same section, along with the tights. Practical rather than exciting, and cheaper than making a separate trip for them.
