Regular, Gel and Dip Polish: What Each Needs

Three systems dominate the nail aisle, and they need different equipment, last different lengths of time and come off in completely different ways. Our Warren store on Van Dyke in the Majestic Plaza stocks all three, open until 9 PM Monday through Saturday.

Regular polish

Air dries, needs no equipment, and comes off with remover in a minute. It lasts a few days to a week with a good base and top coat. It's the most forgiving system: mistakes wipe away, colors change on a whim, and nothing about it damages the nail. For most people this is all they need.

Gel polish

Cures under a UV or LED lamp rather than air drying, which means it's touch-dry immediately and lasts two to three weeks without chipping. It needs a lamp, gel-specific base and top coats, and careful removal: soaking in acetone for ten to fifteen minutes, then gently pushing the softened gel off. Scraping or peeling gel off takes nail layers with it, which is where the reputation for damage comes from.

Dip powder

The nail is coated in a bonding liquid and dipped in colored powder, layered and sealed. It cures without a lamp, lasts around three weeks and is thicker and more durable than gel. Removal is the same acetone soak. The hygiene point matters: powder should be poured over the nail or decanted, never dipped from a shared communal jar.

Choosing between them

If you change color often and want no equipment, regular. If you want two to three weeks of wear and are willing to buy a lamp and remove carefully, gel. If you want maximum durability and thickness, dip. Whichever you choose, the damage comes almost entirely from removal, so plan for that before you start.

Our Warren store

Our Warren store is at 27750 Van Dyke Ave in the Majestic Plaza shopping center, between 11 Mile and 12 Mile. It's open until 9 PM Monday through Saturday and 6:30 PM on Sunday, which makes it the usual evening stop for Warren, Center Line, Sterling Heights and the Oakland County suburbs off I-696. Van Dyke gets you there from the south, and the I-696 Van Dyke exit from the east or west.
