Primers, Setting and Makeup That Lasts All Day

Makeup that looks good at eight and patchy by two is usually a preparation and setting problem rather than a product quality problem. Our Warren store on Van Dyke in the Majestic Plaza carries primers, powders and setting sprays, open until 9 PM Monday through Saturday.

Skin preparation comes first

Nothing sits well on skin that is dry and flaking or freshly slathered in heavy cream. Moisturize, then give it several minutes to absorb before anything else goes on. Applying foundation onto wet moisturizer is one of the most common reasons a base separates within hours.

What a primer actually does

Primers create a layer between skin and makeup and solve specific problems rather than being universally necessary. Mattifying primers control oil on a shiny T-zone. Hydrating primers stop dry patches grabbing foundation. Pore-blurring primers smooth texture. Using the wrong type, such as a mattifying primer on dry skin, makes things worse rather than better.

Setting powder and where to use it

Powder is what stops cream products moving. It matters most where skin creases or gets oily: under the eyes, around the nose, the forehead and chin. Powdering the entire face every day flattens the finish and can look heavy, so target it. Press the powder in rather than sweeping it, which disturbs the base underneath.

Setting spray at the end

A setting spray melts the powder and the base together, taking down the powdery look and adding hold. Hold it at arm's length and mist in an X and T pattern, then let it dry without touching. There are matte and dewy finishing sprays, and they can change the look of a base noticeably, so it's worth matching the spray to the finish you want.
