Formats

Liquid is the most versatile, buildable from sheer to full and available in every finish. Powder foundation is quick, controls shine and suits oily skin, but it sits in fine lines and looks heavy if layered. Stick foundation offers high coverage and portability and works well for spot-covering. Cushion formats give a light, dewy wash and are the easiest to reapply during the day.

Matte and dewy

Matte finishes absorb oil and hold longest on skin that gets shiny, but they emphasize dry patches and texture. Dewy finishes reflect light and make skin look healthy, and they slide on oily skin by afternoon. Satin sits between the two and is the safest choice if you're unsure. Skin type should decide this more than fashion.

Matching formula to skin

Oily skin does best with matte liquid or powder, set with powder. Dry skin does best with dewy or satin liquid or cushion, and a moisturizer underneath. Combination skin often works with a satin base plus powder only on the T-zone. Mature skin generally looks better in lighter, satin formulas, since heavy matte settles into lines.

Coverage is a separate choice

Sheer, medium and full describe how much of the skin shows through, and it's independent of finish. Full coverage everywhere looks like a mask; most people are better served by medium coverage plus concealer where it's needed. Buildable formulas let you make that decision daily rather than at the counter.
