Measure and trim first

Hold the lash against your lash line and see where it ends. Nearly every strip is longer than a natural eye, and the excess at the outer corner is what pokes and lifts. Trim from the outer end, never the inner, cutting a little at a time. Then bend the band gently into a horseshoe between your fingers so it follows the curve of your eye.

Let the glue get tacky

This is the step that decides everything. Apply a thin line of glue along the band, then wait 20 to 30 seconds until it turns from wet and white to tacky and clear. Wet glue slides and refuses to hold; tacky glue grips instantly. Waiting feels like a long time and it is the difference between one attempt and five.

Placing it

Look down into a mirror held below you rather than straight ahead, which exposes the lash line. Place the center of the band first, as close to your own lash line as you can get without touching the waterline, then press down the inner corner, then the outer. Use a lash applicator or tweezers rather than fingers for control.

Finishing

Press your own lashes and the strip together gently at the base so they merge. A thin line of eyeliner along the band hides any gap. If a corner lifts later, a small dot of glue on a cocktail stick fixes it. Apply lashes after eyeshadow and liner, but before mascara, and avoid mascara on the strip itself.
