Coloring and Heat Styling a Human Hair Wig

What can and cannot be colored

Virgin human hair takes color predictably and can be lifted a level or two. Hair that has already been processed to reach its current color has less capacity left and often lifts unevenly or turns brassy. Going darker is nearly always safe; going lighter is where units are lost. Nothing marketed as heat-friendly synthetic can be colored at all.

Test on a hidden section first

Take a small amount of hair from the underside at the nape, where it will never show, and process that first. It tells you the actual result and the timing on that specific unit, which no box can. This step costs ten minutes and saves the whole wig.

Heat styling without cooking it

Wig hair has no scalp feeding it oil and no ability to repair, so it burns faster than growing hair at the same temperature. Use a heat protectant every time and set the iron a step or two lower than you would on your own hair. One slow pass rather than three quick ones. Let it cool completely before combing.

Aftercare for a styled unit

Wash with a sulfate-free shampoo made for wigs, condition the lengths, and air dry on a stand. Colored units need the same care as colored hair: color-safe products, cooler water and less frequent washing. Store on a stand rather than folded, and the style holds far better between wears.
