Cuffs, rings and spirals are the fastest way to change how a finished braid style reads, and the part that decides whether they look good or cause trouble is fit. A cuff that is too wide slides, one that is too narrow has to be forced, and a head with the hardware all in one place looks unbalanced and pulls unevenly. None of that is about which ones you buy.

Size it to the braid, not the style

Cuffs are sold by internal diameter, and the measurement that matters is the width of the braid at the point where the cuff will sit, not at the root or the tip. Braids taper, so a cuff that grips at mid-length will slide straight off the end. Buy a couple of sizes if your braids vary across the head, and check one on a single braid before committing to a full set.

Crimp, slide-on and screw types

A crimped cuff is a metal band you close with your fingers or pliers around the braid; it holds the most securely and is the type that can be over-tightened into a sharp edge. Slide-on rings and spirals have a fixed opening and rely on friction, so they suit a braid of consistent thickness and nothing finer. Screw-in or threaded pieces twist along the braid and hold well on locs, where there is a firm column to grip.

Where on the braid to place them

Clustered near the ends they swing, knock together and catch on clothes. Spaced up the length of a braid they sit still and read as intentional. Leaving a few inches of braid below the lowest piece stops the whole thing sliding off as the style loosens. On a style with a center part, keep the heaviest pieces off the part itself, which is the most exposed part of the install.

How much a head can carry

Metal is heavier than it looks once there are thirty pieces on a head, and the load is carried by your roots. Put jewelry on a portion of the braids rather than all of them, favor the thicker braids, and keep the finer braids around the hairline and temples bare. If a style already felt tight when it was installed, adding hardware is the wrong direction; that combination is how a style that was merely snug starts pulling.

Taking them out without losing hair

Open a crimped cuff by gently unbending it with the flat of a pair of pliers rather than pulling it down over the braid, which strips hair out as it goes. Slide pieces off upward toward the root first if the braid tapers, then off the end. Work with the style intact rather than during take-down, when loose hair catches in everything. Check each piece for a burr or a sharp lip before it goes back in the bag, since that edge is what snags next time.
