Finish changes the color

Finish shifts how a shade reads more than most people allow for, which is why a lipstick can look right in one formula and wrong in another. A matte version of a shade reads deeper and flatter and settles into any dryness. Satin and cream versions of the same pigment sit softer, and a gloss lifts it lighter again.

Liner does more than outline

The practical job of a lip liner is holding color inside the lip line so it does not travel into the fine lines around the mouth by mid-afternoon. Filling in the whole lip with liner before the lipstick goes on gives it something to grip and roughly doubles how long it lasts.

Making it last

Blot after the first coat, apply a second, and blot again. A gloss over the top looks better but shortens the wear, so keep it for occasions where you can reapply. Long-wear liquid formulas last longest but are the most drying, which is worth knowing before a full day in one.
