Closure and Frontal Sizes Explained

Closures and frontals are sold by numbers that mean nothing until someone explains them, and lace is sold by type in a way that affects how the finished install looks. Super Kelly Beauty on Gratiot near 8 Mile stocks the range, and the numbers are worth understanding before you choose.

What the measurements mean

The numbers are the lace dimensions in inches. A 4x4 closure covers four inches across by four inches back, which is enough for a middle or side part. A 5x5 gives a wider parting area. A 13x4 frontal runs thirteen inches ear to ear and four inches back, which is the standard frontal. A 13x6 pushes the parting area deeper for a bigger sweep off the face.

Transparent, HD and regular lace

Regular lace comes in set shades and works well if one matches your scalp. Transparent lace is lighter and adapts to a wider range of skin tones. HD lace is thinner and finer again, so it melts into the skin more convincingly, but the trade-off is real: it tears more easily, both while you're customizing it and over time. If it's your first frontal, transparent is more forgiving.

Lace matching, not lace hiding

A frontal looks wrong when the lace is a different shade from the scalp beneath. Lace can be tinted with a light dusting of foundation or a lace tint spray in a shade close to your skin. Doing this before install, on a mannequin head, is far easier than trying to fix it once the piece is on.

Density and hairline

Pieces come at different densities, and higher is not better. A hairline that looks natural is usually less dense than the rest of the piece, which is what plucking achieves. If a frontal looks like a wig from the front, density at the hairline is usually the reason rather than the lace.
