How to Place and Blend Clip-In Extensions

Most clip-in problems are placement problems, not product problems. A well-matched set placed badly slips, shows at the sides or leaves a visible line where the extension ends and your hair begins. Working from the bottom up

Part horizontally an inch or two above the nape, clip the rest of your hair up out of the way, and place the widest weft along that line. Work upward in horizontal sections, largest wefts low, narrower ones higher. The top of your own hair then falls over everything and hides the attachment points. Placing a weft too high is what makes clips visible when you move.

Keeping the clips from slipping

Clips grip better with something to hold. Backcomb the root of the section lightly, or spray it with a texturizing or hold spray, then snap the clip closed against it. Fine, freshly washed hair is the hardest surface for a clip to hold, so day-old hair works better than same-day. Never place a clip on the same spot every single wear, since constant tension in one place thins the hair beneath.

Blending the ends

A visible line at the ends is the usual giveaway. The fix is cutting or layering the extension to match your own layers, ideally by a stylist the first time. Curling your own hair and the extensions together with the same iron blends the two textures far better than styling them separately.

Sides and the front

The sides need narrower wefts placed slightly lower than feels natural, because the head curves and a weft placed at the same height as the back will peek out. Leave enough of your own hair loose in front to fall over the front clips.
