Body jewelry sits with the earrings, necklaces and rings in the jewelry section at all four Kelly Beauty stores. It's a smaller category than the earring wall, and the things worth checking before buying are different, because these pieces sit inside a piercing rather than against skin.

Material matters more here

A piece worn in a piercing is in contact with tissue rather than resting on it, so metal quality counts for more. Surgical stainless steel and titanium are the safest common choices. Nickel is the usual cause of itching, swelling and weeping, and plated pieces wear through to whatever is underneath. If a piercing reacts to a new piece, take it out rather than waiting it out.

Gauge and length

Body jewelry is sized by gauge, which is the thickness of the bar, and by length or diameter. A piece with the wrong gauge either won't fit or will stretch the piercing. Length matters too: too short presses on the tissue, too long catches on things. If you don't know your gauge, ask at the studio that did the piercing rather than guessing.

Healed piercings only

New and healing piercings should keep the jewelry the piercer fitted, in implant-grade material, until healing is complete. Changing early is a common cause of irritation and prolonged healing. Fashion pieces are for piercings that have fully settled.

Care

Clean pieces before wearing and clean the piercing as advised by the studio. Take body jewelry out before swimming in chlorine where you can, and don't sleep in a piece with sharp ends. Redness, swelling, heat or discharge around a piercing needs a professional rather than a change of jewelry.
